Red Wharf Bay at Evening, or, A Moment in Time

This poem captures a happy moment on the beach while on holiday this summer. The Covid-19 pandemic has reminded us how very precious are travel and time away and time with family. This holiday was somehow full of both very special moments, and very ordinary moments made special by being shared and being in a favourite place.

The sky on fire;

sand hard-rippled underfoot;

a moated castle waiting for the waves.

A hopeful heron;

children bickering at cricket;

gulls rising as a dog runs by.

Laughter drifting;

faint smell of nearby barbeque;

the background ebbing swish of sea.

My senses note each piece

and place them one by one

into this singular suspended moment.

The outlier, unbriefed:

floating out above the bay,

a trumpet’s tune keeps time.
